I prefer to use good old fashioned powder type dishwashing detergent. The gel type is ok also. The key is to not use too much!! All the new E-Star dishwashers use such a tiny amount of water, that using too much dish soap is really hard on the dishwasher and your dishes. My guide line is for you to use one tablespoon of dish soap, unless you have a water softener. Softener customers need to cut back to 1/2 tablespoon per load of dishes. And, don't forget your rinse aid! Dishes wash and dry better with hot water, the correct amount of soap and rinse aid.
